I knew this day would come…but it never prepared me for the kind of mom I would end up being.
Yes, I am THAT mom.
As a teacher for 12 years, teaching some of the littlest learners, I knew all to well the stress of taking a kid to their first day of school. The thing is, I was on the other side of the table. I was the teacher trying to console the children (and sometimes the parents!) when they were having a hard time. I knew that once the parents left, their child would calm down and end up loving school. For those nervous parents, I knew just what to say to put their mind at ease…to let them know their little prince or princess would be just fine.
When we moved to Savannah, and I was afforded the opportunity to quit teaching to stay home with Annika and focus on my photography, I knew at some point she would have to start school. Today was that day. Annika is now a preschooler!
She had the usual nervousness, but nothing that was going to stop her from going. I, on the other hand, went through every emotion possible. First, I was nervous. Then, I was scared. Then, I was lonely. I was even jealous. Jealous that someone else was getting to spend those 3 hours a day with her instead of me.
But finally, I felt relief. Relief that she was going somewhere where she would learn, grow and be loved. Relief that she WAS able to go without the tears. She was cautious, but confident. The kind of child I hoped she would be.
I did try and keep the positive thoughts going as I drove home after dropping her off. It means I will actually get up and shower before 7am everyday. It means I can get the housework done without someone underfoot wanting to play. But for you, it means some new openings in my schedule for sessions! I am now available during the week in the morning. These slots are perfect for maternities and newborn sessions!
So, without further ado, here is my big girl….and look, you even get a glimpse of me!

All I have to say is WOW!!!
For some reason, consignment sales have eluded the north, because when I lived in Chicago, I don’t recall these types of sales. Moving to Savannah however, I have seen many of these types of sales in the area. I was very luck to hook up with the Coastal Kids Market this year. Not only am I am able to meet with other moms in the area and show them what I LOVE to do, I have become witness to something truly remarkable….the consignment sale opening night.
This first night was for volunteers, consignees, and advertisers. The line started to grow around 5:15….it opened at 6. Women brought boxes of band-aids to help support The Next Generation, but also to get a 15 minute head start to shopping! While I am sure they appreciated the head start, the the Children’s Medical Center at Memorial Hospital will benefit even more thanks to all of the donations.
Moms made their way QUICKLY to the area of the store where they could find their children’s size. It was a mad dash I tell ya! Clothes were flying off the rack with great speed. As arms were becoming overloaded, baskets getting full, they found their way to quiet spots in the store to really start their work. Here they would sort through the clothes to actually decide if that they indeed wanted to purchase that item.
It was something I wasn’t quite prepared for! However, I hear tonight will be the big test. Tonight the Coastal Kids Market Consignment Show will open to the general public, again at 6. I suggest stopping by the local drug store and get some character band aids to get your 15 minute head start….you’re gonna need it!

I haven’t posted any of my little one lately…it is like the old saying, the cobbler’s children have no shoes. Not only have I been so busy photographing others, contrary to what may be a popular belief, I have to work hardest getting my own child to smile for the camera.
But the light was just right last night with a storm rolling in to Savannah, and Annika actually said YES when I asked her if I could take some pictures. What I do love, is my little one is always so expressive. So here is a little collage of my favorite faces.

This family was visiting from North Carolina, enjoying a vacation in Hilton Head. What better time to get new family portraits right? We have gorgeous beaches here to make the most beautiful backdrop. Not to mention, their little girl turned 1 recently!
However the weather didn’t look like it would cooperate. As I made my way to Hilton Head from Savannah, I could see the storm clouds following me from the south. As I drove north, I could see storm clouds ahead. This wasn’t looking good. I was in constant contact with my husband, who was at home tracking the storms for me. Please, please, please don’t let it rain for our session!
As I pull in to Sea Pines Beach Club, the skies were incredible. I couldn’t contain my excitement. Then, I met the T Family. Couldn’t be more sweet, or more beautiful. I just knew we were in for a fantastic session.

I have been so blessed to be a part of a wonderful organization the last two years. It was formerly known as The Littlest Heroes Project, but has been renamed Inspiration Through Art. Check out their Facebook page as well! Their mission is to help provide and capture memories for families who are dealing with hectic schedules due to having a child who is suffering from a serious illness or life altering disability. I couldn’t be more proud than to work with such an honorable organization.
I have had many shoots in the last two years, there was the W family, Miss I and her family, Miss M, and a gorgeous senior on her way to college. If you know someone who could benefit, please direct them to the Inspiration Through Art website!
So now, I am lucky to meet the O family….with Super Harris!!! He wore the biggest smile you have ever seen! He is blessed to have a big brother and a big sister to look after him. I had a lot of fun working with the whole family today. Thank you!!!
